Aug. Fun Meter Fill Up Monthly Meeting

We gathered at Kathy's again this month.....Lots to tell you all...I am going to begin almost at the end of the day and work backwards.... Pictured here is our "Stitchin Witches Caldron" back in use...

Rhona hadn't done any discharging or rusting till today...For sure these scarves pic need to be clicked on to get the full effect..Rhona placed steel wool inside this silk scarf and wrapped it around a PCV pipe tying it on with copper wire...then wetting it down with water and vinegar...by the end of the day...She had created this scarf By far our favorite....She had best keep her eye on....cause we all are eyeing it...

Now if that wasn't enough...she pulled out of her bag of goodies a black silk scarf tied in little balls around glass flat beads...the kind you place in the bottom of flower vases...dropped this treasure into the "Caldron" and let it simmer away...We all were grinning and thinking oh boy she is going to have fun unwrapping that baby....Welllllll..The result of that beautiful...

That's not all... here's another one.... Please take the time to enlarge these it will be worth your time....This is all for tonight...but not near all that went on today ...more later...The Ol' Blogger

Survival Kit

Turning 50 is fun for some..at least the ones who throw the birthday party and those attending....Harold's nephew has the pleasure of being at the mercy of those of us attending a hog roast in honor of his 50Th birthday...Of course gag gifts is the main event...In keeping with that I made this "Deer Hunter's Survival Kit"...My first draw string bag with a deer head between the words....Inside are a roll of toilet paper, a baggy to store the used paper, he surely wouldn't want to litter the woods...Kleenex for wiping the tears when he misses the large rack one...gum to help past the time....bandages..in case he falls asleep and falls out of the tree stand...of course snacks, oh yes and last but not least an old alarm clock to wake him so he won't be late for Thanksgiving Dinner again....The Ol' Blogger

At the beseeching of the children...which I am sure was because she had took time and sewed with them on her last visit...they made three projects...

Baby Quilt

Sherry made this baby quilt for her Nephew's new baby that is do January 2010...This will be her older sister's first Grandchild and it is supposed to be a girl...Can you tell Sherry was rooting for a boy..giggles...Sherry started this quilt before they knew what they might get....I think the new Mom to be was, like 2 minutes pregnant when Sherry begin working on this quilt...:0) Now she can just wait for the arrival......or...there is plenty of time to make something else for the sweet baby...

She appliqued bears and hearts and a little lace..pieced by machine, hand quilted..."Somethings are just special and should not be machined quilted"....Claims Sherry...me... machine would be okay..hehehehe The Ol'Blogger

Years of living

My sister took this picture when taking Mom to visit her older sister in the Nursing Home.....My Mom (90) and my Aunt Annie (94) precious hands....Annie's are the one painted purple...Sweet....Over the years these hands have sown their share of rips and done lots of mending...Their Mother did quilt....The girls were into crochet...At night or early morning they would take a little time for themselves with a cup of coffee, needles and yarn....Mom still has the little dress she crochet for me when I was a baby...I will have to see if she will let me have it again....:0)

Aunt Annie always has a smile on her face....the one thing I remember over the years about her is that smile....But when Mom gets ready to leave Aunt Annie always puts on her sad face...Is this sad enough can I go with you? Sad yes.... but also so sweet...when they are together... they are two little girls again...The Ol' Blogger

Football

*The scramble games are over and the real..we keep score... started Friday night...I did get this purse made for my daughter one half hour before they left for the game...."sigh, murmur, sigh"... as I blot the sweat from my forehead....Its amazing what mothers and grandmas can accomplish when under pressure...None of mine have a itch to sew......oh, they have tinkered at it..but why should they...when they have me....

First I made the stripes and quilted the piece next I cut out the purse...I had gone to Sherry with a picture of the school logo in hand and a pathetic look on my face...she melts everytime...:0)...Yes, she would make the logo into a embroidery for my machine...

I did take Harold, potato salad, and a butterscotch pie..that ran when we cut it....with my pitiful look....giggles....Greg and Harold enjoyed each others company while she and I played...Greg grilled hamburgers that were delicious...

I placed the logo on the pocket of the purse...it was a big slam dunk...no that is basketball...it was a touchdown....okay I am out of here...The Ol'Blogger

Julie & Julia

There are really no rules in our group...w-e-l-l.... there may be one...no displeasing to the eye face shots on the blog......so the pic I took Wed. night when we went to see the show...Julie, Julia.... can't be put on here...I am not telling who looked unsightly...but it wasn't me...giggles..

The show was wonderful and the company even better..... with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams....we laugh a lot...The Elder has seen this show more times than she will tell...but at her age... ah..you all know what I mean.....This was not our "monthly fun meter fill up day"....just a spur of the moment outing...Sometimes the girls just need to be together...Our doctors recommends this....Remember it is good for our health....What can I say... "and a good time was had by all" The Ol' Blogger

L7 To The 75Th Power

Looking at this wall-hanging that Kathy composed....makes one want to reach out and touch her artistic labor.....Wouldn't you agree? I believe she used some Sulky Threads in her quilting...which adds flashes of light; sparkle and glitter to the fabric she used...The piece is traveling in the Hoffman Show and will return after touring the USA and Canada sometime after Aug. 2010
This picture was the fabric to be used in this years entries...The rules were a recognizable amount of this fabric must be used in an entry, also must appear in the body of the quilt...Enlarge Kathy's quilt and see the different ways she utilized the fabric in her piece..I truly love it... Kathy, would you tell us what inspired the name of your quilt?...The Ol'Blogger

Cherrywood Fabric Vest and Purse

"Sherry had purchased this kit while in Chicago in 2008....Cherrywood Fabrics"-the only hand-dyed fabric featuring the Exclusive Look of Suede...She made this strip-pieced vest and embellished with variegated thread... Couching in a wavy design...With left over fabric from the kit she made a purse flap to match...Darling...and I know she will look gorgeous when wearing this....There are great fashion designers know continentally and internationally....but we SoTA Sisters don't believe they can hold a candle to our own Sherry...The Ol'Blogger

Stitchin Witches Caldron

OK, someone tell me this shirt of Cindy's did it go into the "Stitchin Witches Caldron"........ ?

Since I wasn't there...I am guessing this was a navy shirt that was tied or twisted and then dunked into the special "Stitchin Witches Brew"....Which from Kathy's report has been updated to a better concoction...And by the pictures it works....The Ol'Blogger

Gelatin Mono-Print

When the girls were visiting with Kathy and her Mom they were playing with gelatin....No, not for eating but trying out "fight of fantasy"....In the August/September Quilting Arts, (which several of us subscribe too).. was directions for Gelatin Mono-print process...So of course the SoTA Sisters decided to give it a try....

I wasn't there the day they did these...Sherry took pic for me and told me they had fun with it..I think this is what they did...added paint to the gelatin surface, then smoothing fabric over the painted surface...they were able to get the one-of-a- kind mono-prints pic in the bottom picture....The Ol' Blogger

Rusty Rose

More than any other flower, the rose have long been a source of fascination and inspiration for cultures around the world.. The rose has captivated and enchanted "The Elders" imagination....I can not begin to tell you all the things she has turned into a rose...This beauty she made from a rusted silk scarf....

BNL Purse

My grandson, Tyler, wanted me to make his girlfriend a purse for her to carry to his football games...using Dory's Stars and Stripes Purse pattern I had purchase a year or two ago...I made the one pictured here in their school colors ....which their emblem is also stars......I did this one in the smooth style...there is also directions for a raggy style...Games start in a little over a week...My daughter, Tyler's Mom, wants me to make her one for the games....Hopefully I will get it done this week....Wonder what I would do with my time if I didn't have children and grandchildren..and a husband...giggles....The Ol' Blogger

Coach Sanders

Harold ask "Do you have any golf material......No, I don't have any golf fabric....why?":0) Well he wanted a wall hanging to put on the PE teacher office wall before he returned to school. "When do you need this by...is next week to soon.... "Sigh...I will work on something".... Not having any golf fabric or patterns...I found a free clip art character...printed it out on acetate sheet and placed on the over head projector...I have ..thanks to Cindy and Kent...They bought several at a sale and he cleaned them up made sure each worked and gave us all one...God love his heart....

Ok, back to my story...I enlarged it and began the process...above is the pic of my finished wall hanging...It really needed more quilting in it...but I am on a time table...and have two purse to finish by next week also..The Ol' Blogger

Kathy and Her Mom

I didn't get to meet Kathy's Mom...that was the day Harold had to have skin cancer removed...Test came back today and they got it all...all is well again...

Above is a pic that Sherry took of Kathy and her Mom on Kathy's enclosed porch...I am sure she is one wonderful lady...as she raised a super daughter...Hopefully I will get to meet her next time she comes to visit... The smiles on their faces says volumes about the daughter and mother relationship....I thank she visited for the week Kathy was on vacation......The Ol' Blogger

WE WON HOFFMAN GROUP CHALLENGE

Hurray... we won the "Hoffman Group Challenge" again this year....We are all so excited to say the least...We got an email with a preview of this year's winners and our quilt "SoTA Sisters" was there...

I am not sure how many people enter ...but in researching "Hoffman Fabrics" I read where.... "Last year, more than 800 people entered what is now one of the most prestigious quilt challenges in the country." And it said " Once the judges have selected the winners and Hoffman Fabrics has awarded the prizes, the top 150 quilts, thirty garments, and thirty dolls are divided into five traveling exhibits..

We are truly blessed to have been chosen as the winner in the "group" category. There has only been three years of the group category...and we have been selected two of the three...The first year our quilt traveled...Last year we shared the honor with two other groups. One from Westerville OH and McDonough, GA. "Thank You" so much to the "Hoffman California-International Fabrics" for selecting us again this year....

I feel so honored to be one of the sisters...we have over the years developed from a group to family.... a special "Thank You" to my SoTA Sisters for teaching me so much.... If I could I would do cartwheels....The Ol' Blogger

Special Guest

At our July meeting we had some special guests....Rhona's girls and their children stopped by and visited with us...Ashley wasn't very happy when I took this pic....she had fallen right before....she wants cousin Nicholas to pick her up....as Lucas looks on...My goodness Nicholas looks like a small version of Grandpa Tony...
